New Democrat Coalition Chairman Statement on the President’s State of the Union Address

Rep. Ron Kind (D-WI), Chairman of the House New Democrat Coalition, issued the following statement on the State of the Union Address this evening:

“There are many bold, bipartisan ideas that President Obama and Speaker Boehner can agree on in this address. I share many of the goals outlined in the agenda, such as investing in next-generation infrastructure, expanded trade that raises standards for workers and businesses, and comprehensive immigration reform. These efforts are a wise next step for a President whose policies have, in part, brought our economy back from the brink and whose efforts have raised GDP, lowered unemployment, raised wages and delivered record highs in the stock market. While I look forward to reviewing the details of many of the President’s proposals, I am especially encouraged by those that will ensure that the benefits of our economic resurgence are shared by all Americans.

I am especially pleased to see the President’s robust defense of policies that encourage Americans to make it here and sell it everywhere. Without question, an export-oriented economy that sends goods and services – not jobs – to countries around the globe will secure our economic future. At the same time, however, it’s important that we get the details of global trade right. Both the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, when completed, must set new standards for environmental protection, safe workplaces and fair treatment of workers at home and abroad. And any Trade Promotion Authority legislation that leads to the completion of these agreements must reflect these goals as well.

Democrats and Republicans agree that the promise of America lies in the strength of our middle class. We agree that anyone should be able to start a small business and watch it grow. We know that the opportunities to earn a living, own a home, and put away a few dollars for retirement are cornerstones of a middle-class life. So let’s heed the President’s call, come together on the principles we share, and get to work building the foundation for a new American prosperity.”

The New Democrat Coalition is dedicated to maintaining America’s standing as the world’s strongest, most successful nation. Founded in 1997, the New Dems believe firmly in the power of American ingenuity and innovation, and are focused on finding ways to foster and harness this creativity to grow our economy, create new American jobs, and ensure a safer and more secure future for our country.
