New Democrat Coalition Endorses The Equality Act

Today, the New Democrat Coalition (NDC) endorsed The Equality Act (H.R. 5), a bill that would ban discrimination against LGBTQ Americans in arenas including public accommodations, housing, federal funding, education, credit, and jury service.

H.R. 5 will amend the Civil Rights Act to illegalize discrimination against individuals on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity. NDC Members have long pushed for equal rights legislation to protect LGBTQ Americans, and this legislation would help our country take an important step forward towards protecting their rights.

“For far too long, LGBTQ Americans have faced discrimination everywhere from the workplace to our housing and lending systems. The reality is that we have not done enough to ensure that the LGBTQ community is treated equally in the eyes of the law. This legislation sends an important message at home and abroad that no one should face discrimination because of who they are or who they love” said NDC Chair Suzan DelBene (WA-01). “I’m pleased to see the NDC move quickly to endorse this legislative package. H.R. 5 is an important step in restoring all Americans’ fundamental right to equality under the law.”

Last Congress, the NDC endorsed the bill and our Members unanimously supported it on the floor. At the time, we convened business leaders and the Humans Right Campaign to advocate for its passage.
