New Democrat Coalition Hails Groundbreaking World Trade Organization Agreement
The New Democrat Coalition released the following statement in response to the World Trade Organization reaching the Trade Facilitation Agreement on Saturday. The WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement will require Member countries to take steps to reduce customs and border procedures that are barriers to international trade. This is the first successful WTO multilateral trade agreement reached in the 20-year history of the organization:
"As New Democrats, we support President Obama's goal to further open world markets to American goods and services, which in turn will create American jobs and strengthen our economy," the statement read. "The historic deal reached at the WTO is estimated to generate as much as $1 trillion in global GDP growth, helping to lift our economy and expand opportunity for all Americans. We commend the efforts of USTR Froman and his negotiating team for their efforts to close this landmark deal."
The above statement received the endorsement of New Democrat Coalition Vice-Chair and Trade Task Force Co-Chair Rep. Rick Larsen, Trade Task Force Co-Chair Rep. Cedric Richmond, and Trade Task Force Co-Chair Rep. Gregory Meeks.
The New Democrat Coalition is dedicated to maintaining America’s standing as the world’s strongest, most successful nation. Founded in 1997, the New Dems believe firmly in the power of American ingenuity and innovation, and are focused on finding ways to foster and harness this creativity to grow our economy, create new American jobs, and ensure a safer and more secure future for our country.
