New Democrat Coalition Immigration Leaders Respond to Release of House GOP Immigration Reform Principles
The leaders of the New Democrat Coalition’s Immigration Task Force, Representatives Jared Polis (CO-02), Joe Garcia (FL-26), and Joaquin Castro (TX-20), and New Democrat Coalition tech leader Rep. Suzan DelBene (WA-01)—all original cosponsors of H.R. 15—issued the following statement in response to the release of the House GOP’s immigration principles.
“We are hopeful that the long awaited release of the House Republicans' immigration principles means that they are finally ready to bring immigration reform for a vote. While this step is welcomed, we need concrete legislation to fix our broken immigration system. Nearly a year ago, the New Democrat Coalition Immigration Taskforce released detailed principles on comprehensive immigration reform to create new American jobs, lower our deficit, unleash our nation’s unmatched innovative capacity and provide a pathway to citizenship for the millions of undocumented folks in our country. Last October, we were proud to help introduce a bipartisan comprehensive immigration bill.
We now know where the parties stand; it’s time for America’s leaders to act. Business leaders, faith leaders, law enforcement officials, and folks on both sides of the aisle alike all agree that now, more than ever, we need comprehensive immigration reform. We are eagerly awaiting the introduction of legislation to accompany these principles and are hopeful that we can work with our Republican colleagues to finally vote on this critical issue.”
The New Democrat Coalition is dedicated to maintaining America’s standing as the world’s strongest, most successful nation. Founded in 1997, the New Dems believe firmly in the power of American ingenuity and innovation, and are focused on finding ways to foster and harness this creativity to grow our economy, create new American jobs, and ensure a safer and more secure future for our country.
