New Democrat Coalition Releases National Security Task Force Goals for the 116th Congress
The New Democrat Coalition National Security Task Force Co-Chairs Brad Schneider, Brendan Boyle, Anthony Brown, and Abigail Spanberger released their goals for the 116th Congress. The National Security Task Force will meet with stakeholders and develop policy positions for the Coalition to advance in both the near term and long term.
National Security Task Force Mission Statement for the 116th Congress:
Ensuring the safety and security of our country and all Americans is a fundamental responsibility of Congress. The New Democrat Coalition National Security Task force will work collaboratively to identify and advance common sense, pragmatic national security and foreign policy solutions that keep our citizens and country safe, maintain peace and security throughout the globe, and promote American values and interests. We will support our Armed Forces, Intelligence Community, Diplomatic Corps, and development professionals as we work together to address new and complex challenges, while encouraging rational debate to identify the best national security strategies for our nation. We will advocate to expand diplomacy and development alongside defense to restore U.S. global leadership, strengthen partnerships with our allies, and restore rationality and direction to our national security policy.
“I look forward to working with my colleagues in the New Democrat Coalition to promote a national security policy that keeps our country safe and reflects our nation’s values,” said Congressman Brad Schneider. “In our increasingly interconnected world, a strong defense requires working in cooperation with our allies and embracing our leadership role in global affairs - including on multinational issues like climate change, terrorism, and human rights. America’s influence abroad relies on a foundation of defense, diplomacy and development, and our task force will work to strengthen all three of these important tools of U.S. foreign policy.”
“I look forward to working with my fellow co-chairs to enhance the national security policies of our nation,” said Congressman Brendan Boyle. “With an administration that continues to play fast and loose with our national security, I am proud to partner with my fellow New Dems to improve our alliances around the world. Today we face a multitude of dynamic, challenging threats. A comprehensive national security policy is sorely needed.”
“As a combat veteran and Vice Chair of the House Armed Services Committee, I look forward to working with my New Democrat Coalition colleagues on the National Security Task Force to shape the Democratic vision and strategy for advancing our nation’s interests at home and abroad,” said Congressman Anthony Brown. “To strengthen our national security, we must increase our near-peer competitiveness, pursue a modern, future-facing force, and invest in our ability to respond to the threats we face. Bolstering our national security also demands we secure prosperity for Americans at home, by tackling climate change, expanding access to educational and employment opportunities for our young people, and ensuring our health care system is affordable and accessible for all.”
“As we face threats and instability around the world, Congress has an obligation to promote diplomatic, military, and intelligence strategies that keep our country safe. As a former CIA case officer, I know we cannot face national security threats alone—and we must build our foreign policy based on rational, sound, and nonpartisan assessments,” said Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger. “As Co-Chair of the New Democrat Coalition’s National Security Task Force, I look forward to working with my colleagues to help restore trust in American leadership abroad. This goal can only be achieved through expanded diplomacy, strengthened security partnerships, and an unwavering commitment to our dedicated public servants. As we begin our work, we must reaffirm our shared values of international cooperation, mutual security, and democracy—the bedrock of long-term global peace.”
