New Democrat Coalition Releases New Report on Expanding Opportunity
Today, the New Democrat Coalition released Closing the Skills and Opportunity Gaps, the first report in the Coalition’s A Future that Works series focused on expanding opportunities in the changing economy. The series, announced in a press conference earlier this month, can be the next progressive advance as it lays out policy priorities that will help make sure our workers are prepared for the jobs of the future.
Within the first paper are three principles for expanding opportunities in the changing economy:
- Give every American access to the tools to succeed in the 21st century economy
- Remove obstacles for Americans to access middle-skill jobs and close the opportunity gap
- Create a culture of lifelong learning and make it easier for workers to invest in their future
“We need to implement policies to help students and workers adapt, including modernizing and expanding access to skills training and formal and vocational education to help workers upskill and change occupations,” said Future of Work Task Force Co-Chair Seth Moulton. “The Coalition will continue to explore innovative policies that support the development and education of our students and workers as they prepare for the changing economy. Our approach must be holistic, encouraging companies to reform hiring practices, giving workers the skills they need, making education and training accessible and affordable, and raising the prestige and cultural value of educational pathways that focus on career ready skills, things like vocational education. Everyone deserves a chance at the American Dream.”
This Congress, the Coalition established the Future of Work Task Force, which is co-chaired by Reps. Bill Foster, Seth Moulton, and Jared Polis. Over the past year, the Task Force has convened forums on Capitol Hill to discuss the challenges that workers across America face today. This report has resulted from the multiple forums and meetings with companies, labor unions, local organizations, and thought leaders over the last several months. New Democrat Coalition Members are focused on finding policy solutions to address the opportunities and challenges related to the evolving nature of work in the changing economy.
