New Democrat Coalition Statement on GOP Tax Plan

House Republicans released their one-sided tax proposal. New Democrats have continued to offer to work with House Republicans on a truly bipartisan tax reform plan, but instead Republican Leaders chose a partisan path that excluded Democrats and many of their own members from the negotiation process. In response, key Members of the New Democrat Coalition released the following statement:

“Our country is in dire need of a modern tax code that supports middle-class families, fosters business development, is globally competitive, encourages innovation and creates opportunities for Americans to prosper in a 21st-century economy. In today’s bill, Republicans laid out a plan that avoided many hard choices, and will explode our national debt by trillions of dollars. Not only does this plan saddle our children and grandchildren with the massive cost of unpaid-for cuts, but by eliminating key deductions like the state and local income tax deduction, medical and student loan expense deduction, and capping property tax deductions, Americans across the country will see their tax bills increase.

“We all want lower taxes and a simpler tax code, but lowering taxes for those who need it least without paying for them and ballooning the national debt is flat-out irresponsible. The New Democrats are ready to sit down and make the hard choices to exact true tax reform, but that requires a bipartisan process and open negotiation.”

This statement is supported by New Democrat Coalition Chair Rep. Jim Himes (CT-04) and New Democrat Coalition Tax-Reform Co-Chairs and New Democrats on Ways & Means Reps. Ron Kind (WI-03), Terri Sewell (AL-07), Suzan DelBene (WA-01), Don Beyer (VA-8), and Brad Schneider (IL-10).
