New Dems Applaud Passage of Bill to Reform U.S. Patent System
Today, leaders of the New Democrat Coalition, chaired by Congressman Joseph Crowley (NY-07), released the following statement hailing passage of the America Invents Act (H.R. 1249):
“The New Dems applaud House passage of the bipartisan America Invents Act, which will modernize our patent system to help innovators get their ideas and products to market faster and more efficiently. America is home to the world’s leading innovators – who have helped bring to market everything from advanced technologies to life-saving drugs – but our current system for approving patents hinders their ability to compete in the global marketplace. We encourage swift enactment of this crucial legislation so we can further solidify our nation’s standing as the global leader in creativity and innovation.”
The New Dems have long called for modernizing our nation’s patent system to bring efficiency and certainty to American innovators and investors. The America Invents Act lays the foundation for American businesses and entrepreneurs to innovate, grow and hire at no cost to taxpayers. In advance of the vote, the New Democrats met with U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Director David Kappos to discuss the urgent need for this legislation to spur U.S. economic growth and global competitiveness. Additionally, the New Dems sent a letter to House Members to build support for the America Invents Act. (Click here to view the New Dem’s letter on the America Invents Act.)
Statement supported by New Dem Leadership Members, led by Chair Representative Joseph Crowley (NY-07), and Vice-Chairs Representative Jim Himes (CT-4), Representative Rick Larsen (WA-2), and Representative Allyson Schwartz (PA-13).
