New Dems Applaud President Biden’s New Indo-Pacific Economic Framework

Today, New Democrat Coalition Chair Suzan DelBene (WA-01) released the below statement following the Biden administration's announcement of negotiations on a new Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF):

“The New Democrat Coalition welcomes the Biden administration’s decision to negotiate a new Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) that will bolster U.S. global leadership, create economic opportunities for Americans, and help the U.S. and our allies better coordinate on critical issues like supply chains, the climate crisis, and labor standards.

“During a time of global inflation and as the Chinese government increases military and economic aggression in the Indo-Pacific region, this new economic agreement will be essential to restoring American leadership in the region, securing global supply chains, strengthening our national security, opening new markets for U.S.-made products, facilitating digital trade, and fostering collective action to tackle climate change.

“Following the Trump administration’s misguided decision to withdraw from the region, New Dems applaud President Biden’s decision to champion a free and open Indo-Pacific region with strong democratic values. As forward-looking trade policy leaders in Congress, New Dems will work closely with the Biden administration on constructing and finalizing a deal that drives widely-shared economic growth, improves Americans’ lives, and reflects our values.”
