New Dems Call for Immediate Bipartisan Action to Prevent Default, Implore House GOP to Continue Negotiations

Today, New Democrat Coalition Chair Annie Kuster (NH-02) released the following statement after Speaker McCarthy decided to adjourn the House for Memorial Day weekend without an agreement on the debt ceiling:

“Secretary Yellen could not have been more clear: if Congress fails to raise the debt ceiling by June 1st, we risk defaulting on our debt for the first time in American history. Instead of heeding her warning, House Republicans are skipping town –– willing to risk the full faith and credit of the United States and plunge the country into an unprecedented crisis.

“Speaker McCarthy has repeatedly said that we need a bipartisan agreement that can receive support from Members in both parties in both chambers. We agree. However, Speaker McCarthy’s actions do not match his rhetoric.

“The Republicans’ plan is a collection of the hardline and extreme legislative proposals New Dems have repeatedly rejected this Congress. From cutting funding for Veterans to withholding Social Security checks for seniors, the consequences of default would be devastating for Americans across our country.

“As Speaker McCarthy remains beholden to the most extreme elements of his party, New Dems are committed to working with responsible Republicans to advance a solution that will pass the House and Senate.

“As lawmakers, we have a responsibility to rise above partisanship and act in the best interest of our nation. There is no time to waste.”
