New Dems Unveil Budget Discipline Working Group to Promote Deficit and Debt Reduction

Working Group will be led by Reps. Etheridge and Foster

Today, members of the New Democrat Coalition announced the formation of the Budget Discipline Working Group to promote fiscally responsible policies that target Federal spending and reduce the deficit and national debt.  The Working Group will be chaired by U.S. Representatives Bob Etheridge (NC-2), a senior member of the House Budget Committee, and Bill Foster (IL-14), a member of the Financial Services Committee and the Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

For nearly a decade, our nation saw excessive spending almost double our nation's debt from $5.7 trillion to $10.6 trillion in 2009.  The New Dem Budget Discipline Working Group is tasked with identifying solutions to shrink the debt and balance the federal government's checkbook.  Building on the New Dems long-standing support for "pay-as-you-go" policies, the Working Group will develop creative solutions to reduce the deficit and national debt while also identifying opportunities to streamline existing Federal programs to ensure taxpayer dollars are being invested wisely and effectively.

"The New Dems are committed to putting an end to the excessive spending habits of the last decade," said New Dem Leadership.  "Thank you to Reps. Etheridge and Foster for spearheading this effort to reign in Federal spending and develop creative solutions that will balance the Federal government's checkbook."

"I am proud to co-chair this very important working group for America's budgetary and economic future," said Congressman Bob Etheridge (NC-02). "North Carolina's working families want to know that Congress is working hard on the issues that matter most in their lives, chief among these is job creation and budget discipline to reduce the debt burden on future generations."

"The New Democrat Coalition is a group of moderate, pro-business Democrats, many of whom have started or participated in a business before their elections to Congress," said Congressman Bill Foster (IL-14).  "We understand that we are not going to have a healthy business climate until we get our fiscal house in order."

The New Dem Budget Discipline Working Group, unveiled by 17 New Dems, includes: Co-Chairs Rep. Etheridge (NC-2) and Rep. Foster (IL-14), along with Rep. Barrow (GA-12), Rep. Bean (IL-8), Rep. Carnahan (MO-3), Rep. Carney (PA-10), Rep. Heinrich (NM-1), Rep Himes (CT-4), Rep. Kind (WI-3), Rep. Kratovil (MD-1), Rep. McMahon (NY-13), Rep. Moran (VA-8), Rep. Perlmutter (CO-7), Rep.
