New Dems Present Episode 20 of the Fly-In: “Senate Layover” with Senators Gary Peters & Alex Padilla

In Episode 20, “Senate Layover” Congressman Greg Landsman (OH-01) took the podcast on the road to meet with Democratic Senators Gary Peters (D-MI) and Alex Padilla (D-CA) and hear their perspective on the government shutdown, now entering its fourth week.

Landsman and Senator Peters discuss the importance of protecting the Affordable Care Act and extending premium tax credits to keep healthcare costs low for the American people, and play a game of True or False about the shutdown and the Trump Administration’s recent activity.

Then Landsman meets with Senator Padilla to talk through the difference between the House and Senate approaches to the shutdown, and whether Speaker Johnson will end the House Republican vacation to make a shutdown-ending deal. Senator Padilla also plays a game of “Who Said It?” with quotes about the shutdown and threats to healthcare.

For the third consecutive week since the start of the Republican shutdown, House Speaker Mike Johnson was asked whether he would change his approach to the government shutdown.

His answer: he has no strategy, so he’s staying the course right off the cliff. It looks like the Speaker is giving House Republicans another week of extended vacation as the government runs headlong towards the record for the longest full shutdown in our nation’s history. Simply because House Republicans refuse to negotiate with Democrats to find common ground and a bipartisan agreement to fund the government...

Member Highlights

Rep. Jim Himes (CT-04) wrote an article on his Substack, The Buzz, about the developing situation in the Caribbean. He writes, "Despite what the President might claim, there is no legal authority for these strikes, and it is shocking to me that the military leadership is willing to comply."

Rep. Glenn Ivey (MD-04) hosted a roundtable discussion with medical professionals and health care officials to discuss the impacts of cuts to healthcare, specifically ACA tax credits. He learned more about how his constituents will likely be affected under Republicans' proposals.

Rep. Sarah Elfreth (MD-03), Comptroller Brooke E. Lierman, State Senator Pamela Beidle (District 32), and Delegate Dana Jones (District 30A) gathered at Chase Brexton Health Care’s Glen Burnie Center to discuss the impacts on Maryland if Congress does not act to address our nation’s looming health care crisis and extend the ACA tax credits.

Rep. Jennifer McClellan (VA-04) and Protect Our Care Virginia hosted a roundtable on Tuesday sounding the alarm on how the expiration of Enhanced Premium Tax Credits (EPTC) under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) at the end of this year will drive up health care costs for Virginians and impact our entire health care system.
