New Dem of the Week: Tony Cárdenas

New Dem of the Week: Rep. Tony Cárdenas (CA-29)

Rep. Cárdenas exits the Dragon 2 space capsule, manufactured by California company SpaceX.

Why he's proud to be a New Dem:

"For me, joining the New Democrat Coalition was the obvious choice. Families in the San Fernando Valley aren't interested in which politician is winning or losing in Washington, D.C. They're much more concerned about who is reaching across the aisle to create new American jobs, unleash the unmatched innovative potential of our economy and put our country on the path to a sound fiscal footing. I believe the New Democrat Coalition does exactly that."

His pragmatic, problem-solving experience:

As Chair of the California State Assembly's Budget Committee, Tony oversaw the most robust reserve budget in the history of California, ensuring that the state's finances were managed responsibily while bringing $650 million in new school construction to the state. He blends a business background, expertise in engineering and a proven problem-solver's attitude to the work of legislation. Tony is the first Latino elected to serve the San Fernando Valley in Congress.

Tony's innovative policy entrepreneurship:

Tony worked tirelessly to ensure that Huy Fong Foods, a producer of popular items like sriracha sauce, stayed in California and created local jobs here at home. He's also reached across the aisle to find partners on pragmatic legislation to help the American people. He joined Rep. Blake Fahrenthold (R-TX) on a bill to protect American companies from 'patent trolls,' entities that prey on small business owners with frivolous lawsuits. He also joined conservative Republican Rep. Mick Mulvaney (R-SC) on a bill to help American workers relocate from high-unemployment regions of their state to better job markets. Tony believes that with mobility, every American worker can search for and find new job opportunities and new hope.
