New Dem Leadership Endorses Slate of Public Safety Bills to Prevent Crime & Protect Our Communities
New Dems are Working to Fight Crime and Improve Public Safety for all Americans by Investing in Resources and Reforms for Law Enforcement
Today New Democrat Coalition (NDC) Leadership endorsed a slate of seven bills that will address rising public safety concerns across the country by investing in key resources and reforms to prevent crime and protect communities.
Today’s endorsement builds on the actions New Dems have already taken to improve policing and public safety. First, New Dems voted to pass the American Rescue Plan (ARP), which provided critical funding to state and local governments to keep law enforcement officers on the job. To date, the ARP has provided at least $10 billion in new public safety and violence prevention funding. Second, House Democrats secured more than $100 million in Community Project Funding for more than 100 law enforcement and community policing initiatives across the country. And, just a few days ago, New Dems helped pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the first gun violence prevention law in a generation.
But, more work must be done to keep Americans safe from violent crime. That’s why New Dems are endorsing a slate of seven commonsense bills to protect our communities and prevent crime. These bills will improve public safety, invest in effective local law enforcement training, promote programs that de-escalate violence and improve mental health care, increase law enforcement accountability and transparency, and create programs to break the cycle of violence in communities that are disproportionately impacted by crime. New Dems will continue working tirelessly to pass each of these bills and enact legislation to keep Americans safe.
“As Members of Congress, we have no higher duty than to ensure every American is safe in their community,” said NDC Chair Suzan DelBene (WA-01). “That’s why New Dems are working with our colleagues on both sides of the aisle to invest in effective public safety programs that help prevent crime and protect the rights of all Americans. New Dems will work to get these bills signed into law so we can ensure every American is truly safe no matter where they live.”
