New Dems Applaud President Biden’s Decision to Cut Energy Costs for Americans by Reducing Trade Barriers on Solar Products

Rolling Back Ineffective Trump-Era Tariffs Makes Progress on the New Democrat Coalition Action Plan to Fight Inflation

Today, New Democrat Coalition (NDC) Chair Suzan DelBene (WA-01) released the below statement following President Biden’s decision to lift Trump-era tariffs on Canadian solar products, which will help continue the clean energy transition and lower energy costs for Americans. This decision marks forward progress on the New Dem Action Plan to Fight Inflation, which called for rolling back harmful Trump-era tariffs to cut costs for American families, businesses, and manufacturers.

“I applaud the Biden administration’s decision to remove tariffs on Canadian solar products. I called on the administration to take this action last year as a way to boost good-paying solar manufacturing jobs in Washington state and across the country,” said NDC Chair Suzan DelBene (WA-01). “This decision will increase trade between the United States and Canada, strengthen our supply chains, and expand access to affordable clean energy for U.S. households. Moving forward, increasing trade in environmental goods like solar must remain a top priority as we work with countries around the world to combat climate change.”

The NDC has long advocated for rolling back harmful Trump-era tariffs and trade policies. New Dems are committed to pursuing a pro-growth trade agenda that cuts costs for Americans, promotes U.S. workers and businesses, better coordinates with our allies and like minded countries, and positions our nation to lead the global economy. Earlier this year, New Dems urged the Biden administration to act swiftly to resolve the investigation into and potential additional tariffs on Southeast Asian solar technologies in order to continue the transition to a clean energy economy, lower energy costs for families, and meet our clean energy goals. Following this push, New Dems welcomed the President’s announcement of a two-year tariff exemption on those imports last month.

New Dems will continue to work closely with the Biden administration to deliver solutions for the American people that lower prices, strengthen supply chains, reduce costly trade barriers, and ensure every American has the opportunity to succeed.
