New Democrat Coalition Chair Statement on 51st Anniversary of Roe v. Wade Decision

Today, New Democrat Coalition Chair Annie Kuster (NH-02) released a statement on the 51st anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision.

In addition to the Coalition’s enduring support for codifying Roe through the Women’s Health Protection Act, New Dem Members are championing legislation to protect access to women’s health care. From Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher’s bill to protect the right to travel for an abortion and Congresswoman Kim Schrier’s legislation protecting doctors who provide safe abortion care from criminal penalties and Congresswoman Mikie Sherril’s bill to protect the reproductive rights of our servicewomen and military families, New Dems are dedicated to restoring, preserving, and expanding the freedom to choose.

“Today, while we should be celebrating the anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, New Dems are instead fighting to restore the right to reproductive health care that was taken from women two years ago.

“Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe, the American people have taken every opportunity to protect their fundamental freedoms. From Kansas to Ohio, New Dems hear Americans’ calls, and we’re listening. Our Members are pushing back against the far-right extremists who are working in Congress and around the country to make women less free in 2024 than they were in 1974.

“Through our 2024 Freedom Agenda, New Dems are fighting for the freedom to make personal health care decisions for every American, which includes ensuring access to reproductive care regardless of location, race, or income.

“While we were devastated by the overturning of Roe two years ago, we were not deterred. On the 51st anniversary of Roe, New Dems are more determined than ever to restore its promise. It’s time for Congress to pass a law to codify this fundamental freedom once and for all.”
