New Dems Applaud President Biden’s Executive Order Protecting and Strengthening Access to Contraception

Today, New Democrat Coalition Chair Annie Kuster (NH-02) released a statement applauding President Biden’s Executive Order that protects and strengthens access to contraception. Ahead of the one year anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, this marks the third Executive Order the President has signed to safeguard access to reproductive healthcare.

“One year ago tomorrow, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, stripping women of their fundamental freedoms for the first time in 50 years. In the year since the Dobbs decision, Republican-led state legislatures have been racing to pass draconian abortion restrictions and outright bans that have led to devastating physical, mental, and economic impacts on women and their families across the country. Women in 2023 have fewer rights than women in 1973. New Dems will not stand for this.

“We applaud the President’s Executive Order to reduce the barriers women face in accessing contraception. Improving coverage of, increasing access to, and reducing the cost of contraception will help millions of women get the reproductive care they need and improve overall health and economic outcomes.

“The Biden administration’s actions are critical, but we must do more. In order to truly give women the freedom to make their own health care and family planning decisions, Congress must pass the Women’s Health Protection Act. New Dems remain undeterred in our efforts to enshrine this essential freedom into federal law.”
