New Dems Applaud President Biden’s Safer America Plan and Push for Passage of Public Safety Bills Endorsed by New Dem Leaders

Last Week, New Dem Leadership Endorsed a Slate of Bills to Fight Crime and Improve Public Safety for All

Today New Democrat Coalition (NDC) Chair Suzan DelBene (WA-01) released the below statement on President Biden’s Safer America Plan to invest in community policing and crime prevention to make our communities safer. This announcement follows NDC leadership’s endorsement of a slate of bills to protect our communities by investing in law enforcement, community policing, and gun violence prevention.

“I applaud the Biden administration’s commonsense plan to fight crime and ensure every American is safe,” said NDC Chair Suzan DelBene (WA-01). “The Biden administration’s plan includes necessary actions to invest in effective community policing, decrease gun violence, and reduce crime to protect our communities. Last week, New Dem Leaders endorsed and called for passage of seven smart pieces of legislation that would improve public safety, invest in effective law enforcement, create violence interruption programs, and reform our criminal justice system. Congress needs to answer President Biden’s call for a safer America and pass these bills. I salute Reps. Horsford, Demings, Blunt Rochester, Spanberger, Gottheimer, Phillips, and Wild for their leadership to fight crime and improve public safety for all.”

New Dems have already taken bold actions to combat crime and improve public safety by investing $10 billion in public safety and violence prevention through the American Rescue Plan, investing $100 million for law enforcement and community policing initiatives through Community Project Funding, and passing the Safer Communities Act to decrease gun violence and save lives.

Last week, the New Democrat Coalition endorsed the following public safety bills:

  • H.R. 6375, the COPS on the Beat Grant Program Reauthorization and Parity Act of 2022, Rep. Abigail Spanberger (VA-07) and Tom Rice (R, SC-07)
  • H.R. 7826, the Pathways to Policing Act, Rep. Dean Phillips (MN-03)
  • H.R. 6448, the Invest to Protect Act of 2022, Rep. Josh Gottheimer (NJ-05)
  • H.R. 4118, the Break the Cycle of Violence Act, Rep. Steven Horsford (NV-04)
  • H.R. 5768, the VICTIM Act of 2021, Rep. Val Demings (FL-10)
  • H.R. 2864 the Clean Slate Act, Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester (DE-AL)
  • H.R.3127, Safe Interactions Act of 2021, Rep. Susan Wild (PA-07)

New Dems will continue working with the Biden administration, Congressional leadership, and our colleagues across the aisle to get these bills across the finish line and keep all communities safe.
