New Dems Call on Republicans to Join Their Efforts to Avoid the Disastrous Consequences of Default and Advance Smart Fiscal Policies

Today, New Democrat Coalition Chair Annie Kuster (NH-02), NDC Economic Growth and Fiscal Responsibility Task Force Chair Chrissy Houlahan (PA-06), and Vice Chair Nikema Williams (GA-05) released a statement following today’s floor vote on the House Republican “Default on America Act”:

“Today, Americans saw that while Republicans are willing to push our country to the edge of economic catastrophe, Democrats are united behind passing legislation without delay that would prevent a default and keep our country strong.

“While we wait for Speaker McCarthy to bring to the floor responsible legislation that avoids the disastrous consequences of default, New Dems stand willing to discuss our nation's fiscal future with responsible leaders on both sides of the aisle.

“Durable fiscal policy requires Republicans and Democrats coming together to make the hard choices that will ensure our economic strength and resilience for generations to come. That's why this Congress, New Dems have formed an Economic Growth and Fiscal Responsibility Policy Task Force to explore long- and short-term solutions to our economic challenges.

“Congress must make progress on these challenges: prevent a default on our debt now and advance bipartisan discussions about smart fiscal policies that will grow our economy. Republicans who are serious about strengthening our economy should abandon their approach and join Democrats in moving forward – Americans deserve certainty from their leaders.”
