New Dems Continue Call to Reinstate Expanded Child Tax Credit Following Release of Census Bureau Report
Today, New Democrat Coalition Chair Annie Kuster (NH-02) released the following statement after the release of the U.S. Census Bureau’s nationwide figures for poverty, income, and health insurance coverage in 2022 from its Current Population Survey (CPS).
“The data is clear: the Child Tax Credit (CTC) is one of the most effective tools we have to combat childhood poverty. The American Rescue Plan’s enhanced CTC has been credited with lifting millions of children out of poverty and ushering in the lowest childhood poverty rate on record.
“Unfortunately, Congressional Republicans stood in the way of extending this proven and effective program beyond 2021, and as a result, today’s Census Bureau Report shows that childhood poverty doubled in 2022. That is unacceptable.
“Study after study shows that investing in the success and well-being of our younger generations makes a real difference — from improved academic performance to long-term gains in both physical and financial health.
“New Dems remain committed to working with anyone to renew and make permanent the expanded Child Tax Credit to reverse this trend and secure a future where no American child grows up in poverty.”
