TRANSCRIPT: New Democrat Coalition Chair DelBene Calls for Swift Action to Strengthen U.S. Supply Chains, Create Jobs, and Cut Costs for Americans

Rep. Suzan DelBene: “As leaders in technology and innovation policy, New Dems know the conference on the U.S. Innovation and Competition Act will be a golden opportunity for us to take bold, bipartisan action to help solve these challenges and grow our economy.”

Today, New Democrat Coalition (NDC) Chair Suzan DelBene (WA-01), NDC Vice Chair for Policy Scott Peters (CA-52) and Reps. Haley Stevens (MI-11), Susan Wild (PA-07), and Lisa Blunt Rochester (DE-AL) held a press call on the Coalition’s top priorities for the U.S. Innovation and Competition Act (USICA) conference committee. New Dems are urging Congress to take swift action to secure U.S. supply chains, create jobs, invest in scientific research, and strengthen American global leadership

NDC Chair Suzan DelBene’s remarks can be found here and below:

I am Suzan DelBene the Chair of the New Democrat Coalition. I am here with New Dem Members Vice Chair Scott Peters and Reps. Susan Wild, Haley Stevens, and Lisa Blunt Rochester to discuss the United States Innovation and Competition Act. Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Schumer recently announced that Congress would go to conference on this legislation.

But first I wanted to give a quick update on the New Dem Coalition and an important event that took place last week. The New Dem Coalition is the largest caucus in the House. We have 97 Members following the addition of two new Members we’re very excited about– Shontel Brown from Ohio and Nikema Williams from Georgia.

Our Members are forward thinking and committed to policies that grow the economy, boost American innovation, and deliver tangible results for Americans. As we continue to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic, we know Americans are excited that the economy is growing, and jobs are coming back, and wages are rising. But they are also concerned about higher prices at the pump and in their grocery store, challenges with getting particular products especially during the holiday season.

President Biden and Democrats in Congress have taken bold steps to address these challenges. President Biden has been laser focused on this issue – making sure our ports are operating 24/7 and working directly with our nation’s retailers and businesses to secure our supply chains. New Dems have been critical to getting the bipartisan infrastructure law to the President’s desk earlier this year. This new law will invest in our ports and railways and roads – and build long-term infrastructure for our country. We are working to pass the Build Back Better Act, help provide child care and reduce childcare and healthcare costs. On average a family of four will save $7,400 dollars a year under this bill.

But there’s more to be done. As leaders in technology and innovation policy, New Dems know the conference on the U.S. Innovation and Competition Act (USICA) will be a golden opportunity for us to take bold, bipartisan action to help solve these challenges and grow our economy.

That’s why we are here today to highlight the New Democrat Coalition’s four top priorities for USICA, which are:

  • Securing U.S. Supply Chains for Critical Goods and Technologies

  • Creating Jobs and Spur Innovation across the Country

  • Investing in Scientific Research Scientific and Next-Generation Technology Innovation

  • Ensuring America Leads the Global Economy

Through these priorities to lower prices, promote American leadership on the world stage, and create jobs and opportunities so Americans can thrive in the 21st century. New Dems have already been involved with administration officials and industry leaders to discuss our priorities, including with Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo. We are looking forward to continuing these conversations with the Biden administration and other Congressional leaders about we can make sure a final bill Americans’ concerns and improves their lives.
