New Democrat Coalition Celebrates Congressional Passage of Chips Legislation to Lower Costs, Secure Supply Chains, and Protect U.S. National and Economic Security
Today, New Democrat Coalition (NDC) Chair Suzan DelBene (WA-01) released the following statement celebrating Congressional passage of the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, which now heads to the President’s desk for his signature. Since last year, the NDC has led the charge on a bipartisan innovation bill that lowers costs, secures supply chains, and boosts American global leadership. The Coalition laid out priorities for the bill at the end of last year, called for urgent action on this legislation as part of the New Dem Action Plan to Fight Inflation, and endorsed the bill earlier this week.
“Today is a great day for America’s economy, national security, and working families. And it’s also a great day for those who care about good governance. By passing the CHIPS and Science Act today, we've proven that even during a time of hyperpolarization, putting country over party works and bridging the gap between the right and the left yields real results.
“Since last year, the New Democrat Coalition has championed this legislation and played a central role in working with Members on both sides of the aisle and the Capitol to pass a bill that lowers costs for Americans, strengthens supply chains, and boosts American global leadership. This commonsense legislation will do just that, and American families, workers, and businesses will be stronger as a result.
“New Dems made this legislation a core component of our Action Plan to Fight Inflation and our Members worked tirelessly to ensure a strong final bill. New Dems are particularly excited that the bill includes NDC Chair Emeritus Kilmer’s RECOMPETE Act, a billion-dollar program that will create good paying jobs and lasting economic growth in communities that have been left behind. As Chair of the New Democrat Coalition, I’m proud of the work each of our Members has done to shape, negotiate, and advance this legislation to the President’s desk.
“This isn’t the first major piece of legislation Democrats have delivered and it’s certainly not the last. Since 2021, Congressional Democrats have sent several historic and common-sense bills to President Biden’s desk, including the American Rescue Plan to help our country, workers, and families recover from the pandemic, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to give Americans better roads, cleaner water, and faster internet, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act to prevent violent crime, and now the CHIPS and Science Act to spur innovation, lower costs, and secure supply chains. We know our work is never done, and we’ll continue putting people over politics to strengthen our country.”
The CHIPS and Science Act will invest $52 billion in domestic chip production, significantly boost cutting edge research and development through the National Science Foundation, establish regional tech hubs to create jobs and spur innovation in new parts of the country, grow our STEM workforce, and expand American-made 5G technology.
